To dive deeper into the past all the way to 2018 Prime Day Ring cameras deals, the Ring Spotlight Camera, which you can read about in our Ring Spotlight Cam Battery review, was discounted from $199 to $139.99, a savings of nearly $60. Ring Protect Plans

Ring also offers the Ring Protect plans, which included cloud storage so that we could view our footage after the fact. Since we also have the Ring Alarm security system (read our Ring Alarm review here to see how we liked it), we invested in the Ring Protect Plus plan, which included 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup, along with 60 days of cloud storage.

But even without paying anything after the initial equipment costs, we’d still be able to live-stream footage from the Ring— Always Home app, speak to visitors through the cameras’ two-way audio, and use Alexa to control our camera without using our hands. Compared to companies like SimpliSafe, which made us pay $24.99 a month to receive motion notifications, Ring is quite the bargain, and Prime Day only enhances that even more.

Tip: With the Ring Protect Plus plan, you’ll get an additional 10 percent off their products in addition to their Prime Day deals.

Ring Company Background

Ring wasn’t always an arm of Amazon, which has made 21 acquisitions in 2017 through 2018, including Ring for $1.2 billion in 2018.2 They began as a humble company called DoorBot that was actually rejected on the TV show Shark Tank, believe it or not.

But by 2018, they had a 97 percent market share of the U.S video doorbell market.3 Now, Ring sells products other than video doorbells like the Ring Video Doorbell Pro; obviously, they sell security cameras, the topic of this article, but also motion sensors, smart speakers like the Echo Dot with Clock and the Echo Flex, smart displays like the Echo Show 8, door/ window sensors, smart lighting, and other smart home offerings.

Did You Know: Before Amazon bought it for $1.2 billion, Ring was rejected on the venture capital show Shark Tank. Moral of the story? Never take no for an answer!

Ring’s story isn’t all inspirational. The company has gotten into trouble for both hackings of their cameras and their partnerships with over 400 local police departments in the U.S. Some consider Ring cameras to be surveillance devices, while many others see the Alexa integration as further recording. Amazon admits that its employees listen to these recordings to improve Alexa’s artificial intelligence, so when it comes to privacy, Ring is not the most trustworthy, given its track record.

That being said, Ring has addressed privacy concerns with a couple of key updates. Privacy zones, for example, have their cameras ignore designated areas of people’s homes. On certain cameras like the battery-powered Ring Stick Up Cam Battery, users can completely disable motion alerts, motion recording, and audio. We hope more of Ring’s cameras get these capabilities in the future, as that would help to build more trust in the company.

Spring is upon this, which means that Prime Day is right around the corner! Before you use Amazon’s patented one-click ordering,4 wait until June 21 and 22 to unlock the largest amount of savings.
